RSS help and tutorial. Feeds auto-discovery

RSS auto-discovery is a way that makes possible for web browsers and services to automatically detect a blog's feed / RSS. It's also a way to inform blog readers that they can follow blog's updates easily via a feed reader. To learn more about how RSS works, please check this link.

Usually blog platforms enable blog feeds automatically, so that blog readers can follow blog updates, as well as services that rely on blog feeds can function properly.

If RSS auto-discovery is not enabled, normally you'll get an alert that your blog doesn't have an RSS while you submit your blog with us. Generally, you should be able to find options to enable feeds in your blog control panel. Here's how to enable RSS for *blogspot.com blogs:
  • Log in to blogger.com and click on "Settings" and then "Other";
  • Look for "Site Feed" section and make sure that "Allow Blog Feed" is not set to "None".

Alternatively, enabling RSS can be done manually by adding a simple line of code in the header of the blog, referring the actual RSS feed of the blog. The following line of code should be added somewhere between <head> and </head> tags in blog's html code:
<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="TITLE" href="RSS-URL" />
changing TITLE and RSS-URL accordingly to point to the RSS of your blog. It is recommended setting only one RSS feed URL for auto-discovery, in order to make sure the right content is distributed from your blog (e.g. not getting your blog comments retrieved from the RSS rather than the actual blog posts).

Completing the above will avoid certain warnings shown when you submit your blog to BlogUpp or other blog services. Note as well that empty RSS post titles prevent us from making use of your blog posts in order to promote the blog. If that is your case - please consider adding titles and then re-submit your blog.

Feed errors may also be caused when certain uncommon symbols are written in blog posts, resulting in feed parsing errors. Some web browsers will not report such errors, so you won't be aware of eventual issues. Internet Explorer and Opera web browsers are more sensitive to such errors and report them accordingly. Please consider to check your feeds in these browsers to make sure your blog fee is setup property.

Being one of these bloggers whos blog wasn't recognized, i discovered the culprit.

My wordpress was instructed to give gzipped content "if the browsers ask so". Aparently, BlogUpp! asks for gzipped when in fact it doesn't know a yota about it.

Just disabled gzip in wordpress options and it worked like a charm!

Anonymous Anonymous said... (Monday, July 21, 2008)

I'm using a self-hosted Wordpress installation with Feedburner feeds and Blogupp! does not recognize my feed. I have an RSS icon showing in my browser when viewing my page and my RSS is using the proper meta tags:
link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Artisan Love RSS Feed" href="http://artisanlove.com/feed/"

Please advise.

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Tuesday, July 22, 2008)

Indeed, everything is configured properly, and there shouldn't be an issue with submitting your blog.
Probably there had been a connectivity issue, which was settled, as we've noticed that you managed to successfully submit your blog.

Thanks for your patience, and please accept our apologies for the inconvenience.

I think that in my blog posts tendo RSS well, but at the moment trying to enter blogupp tells me that I do not have RSS or is empty ..

as you can help me?

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Monday, August 18, 2008)

@GeekBoy: Please send us by email the link to your blog, for us to be able to assist you further.

I'm also trying to enter and blogupp tells me that I do not have RSS or is empty....my link is http.://robertadacosta.blogspot.com

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Sunday, January 04, 2009)

@Anonymous / Roberta Dacosta: Thanks for asking.
Your blog's case is the one mentioned above, and namely that the post titles are empty. As they are mandatory for our service to properly spread your posting within our community, the only solution is to edit your postings and specify the titles.

Anonymous Anonymous said... (Monday, January 12, 2009)

Also can't add. I have titles, I have RSS working (followed your excellent tutorial) and still can't add. Could you advise?

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Monday, January 12, 2009)

Jack, you are right. Everything seems working in Firefox. But not in Internet Explorer, whose components we rely on while getting the RSS. The error Internet Explorer displays while accessing your feeds is the following: "Feeds with DTDs are not supported", and as a result no RSS is visible.

Please review your configuration (try googling for the text of the error) and re-submit again.

Hi. I operate Slungover.com and have recently installed an rss feed.
I found the above to be helpful and have used the meta declaration to designate the location of my feed, but I still am having trouble reading the file, or at least the BlogUpp software is. I am curious as to what I might be having trouble doing at this point... I would love to appreciate what it is you all do.

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Wednesday, January 21, 2009)

@Slung: Thanks for being receptive to our recommendations.
Concerning the latest issue you are reporting - we've tested your weblog from different locations, and it showed up that it isn't accessible from our production servers, which are US based.

There might be something wrong with your ISP (Internet Service Provider) routers configuration. The tracing goes up to "hostnoc.net", and then stops, without reaching slungover.com.

Please consider contacting your provider for further support. Should you need additional information, please let us know.

Muchas Gracias por su atención

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Wednesday, February 11, 2009)

Yesenia, please consider Google Translate widget in the sidebar on the right to understand our reply, should you not know English.

The link you've provided above stands for a deleted blog, and it seems it was mistyped.
We've identified the blog in question from your profile, and here is the reason you can't manage to submit your blog: the posts do not have titles, which are necessary in order to build a proper RSS image.

Please consider adding titles, and try again.

Anonymous Anonymous said... (Tuesday, March 03, 2009)

So weird, my blog actully has rss feed:
http://www.techmango.com/blog/feed.asp ,
but blogupp said it hasn't rss!?

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Tuesday, March 03, 2009)

It's true, your blog (http://www.techmango.com/blog/) has RSS - and you should be ok submitting it.
It looks however you are trying to submit your main url (http://www.techmango.com), which has no RSS actually. Having that in mind - please try again.

Blogger SANA said... (Monday, March 09, 2009)

I'm trying to enter and blogupp tells me that I do not have RSS or is empty. my link is http.://afrikanka.blogspot.com

Anonymous Anonymous said... (Wednesday, March 11, 2009)

@SANA, You can easily sort that out just by adding titles to your blog posts. As we've mentioned above in several instances, empty RSS post titles prevent BlogUpp! from building a proper blog's snapshot.
Please consider that, and try again.

Blogger Sandra Boaventura said... (Tuesday, March 31, 2009)

I'm also trying to enter and blogupp tells me that I do not have RSS or is empty....my link is http.://sandracliques.blogspot.com

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Tuesday, March 31, 2009)

@Sandra Boaventura, the first problem is that your blog has no blogging content as such, but just PTC banners.
Secondly, as stated in our Terms of Service, we are not accepting such blogs.
Thanks for understanding.

Anonymous Recycled Frockery said... (Tuesday, April 14, 2009)

hello, I've added the tag to the template header;
as well, I have an rss widget of my site playing fine;
that was built with widgetbox; so I don't understand why
your widget won't detect my rss feed.

there are two feeds; I use selfhosted wordpress;

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Tuesday, April 14, 2009)

@Recycled Frockery, you are right - your blog has RSS feeds configured.
But they have as well to contain the blog posts, whereas all your feeds variations are completely empty when accessed through Firefox, and display and error through Internet Explorer.
Just click on the RSS icon in your browser while on your blog, and check it yourself.
Please consider fixing the error and you are welcome to resubmit.

Anonymous Anonymous said... (Thursday, April 16, 2009)

Hello, I've tried to add http://www.ru-xxi.ru/feed/ to blogupp, but it says that there is no blog. Please help. (please note! the blog is in Russian).

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Friday, April 17, 2009)

@ru-xxi, no problem.
We see that you have RSS feeds, but the blog is not configured for browsers to detect your blog feeds.
To solve this, there should be added into your blog's header the following:
'link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RU-XXI RSS" href="http://www.ru-xxi.ru/feed/"' (correct the syntax as mentioned in the post above)
Then just visit blogupp.com, and enter your blog URL, i.e. http://www.ru-xxi.ru.
Let us know if you need more assistance.

Blogger Ram Bansal said... (Wednesday, May 06, 2009)

While I was trying to get your widget for my site theosophus.com on wordpress platform, I got the error message of having no RSS feed. To rectify the fault, I pasted the code provided by your site on style sheet of my site under header, but the RSS icon did not show in the header area. For your information, the file was not an html file but a php file.
Will you pl. suggest me an alternative way through my email rambansal@theosophus.com

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Wednesday, May 06, 2009)

@Ram Bansal, you are on the right track.
Note however that besides having a reference in your blog to RSS, the feeds themselves need to be valid.
In your blog's case, when accessing your RSS feeds through a web browser there are displayed xml parsing errors. Click on the RSS icon in your browser while on your blog, and check it yourself.

To fix that you might want to consider registering your blog with FeedBurner, and update your feeds reference.
We are repeating, that's not a standard situation, as the blogging platforms normally set the feeds automatically, and it occurs when using custom techniques.

Please let us know if you need further assistance, so that you could resubmit your blog successfully.

Anonymous Anonymous said... (Wednesday, May 27, 2009)

my blog is http://newsforthelazy.blogspot.com

I am fairly new to blogging, so when reading the comments above, I just got more confused.

It says I don't have a RSS.

Please help me out

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Thursday, May 28, 2009)

@Ricky, as mentioned in the post above, to check whether your RSS feeds are correctly configured, just open your weblog in a web browser, and see wether the RSS icon is enabled, meaning that it has detected your feeds.
Your blog feeds are not detectable. Please consider following the above recommendations, and re-submit.

As a Blogspot blogger, you might want to explore Blogspot help to find out why your blog is not RSS enabled. It seems at first glance that you've done some customization, which disabled it.

Anonymous ds said... (Tuesday, June 02, 2009)

Hi, I have a few sites I'd like to enroll but it's just not working for me. On the site http://www.newzgeek.com I followed the instructions to make sure the meta tag mentioned above is included in the home page and it is. The page also displays and RSS link, and clicking on the link brings you to http://www.newzgeek.com/newzgeek.xml, which you can subscribe to with an RSS reader, meaning that it's a legal page. Yet when I try to get the widget, I get the "sorry" message. What else should I do? The site was built in iWeb, if that makes a difference (I have modified if considerably and a lot of manual html adjusting when into it).

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Tuesday, June 02, 2009)

@ds, hi!
Your issue is determined by the redirects on your blog. The initial landing pages don't have RSS as such, while the redirects have been disabled on purpose in order to invalidate tricky submissions, such as those of shortened URLs.

Try specifying complete path to your feeds also on landing pages, and re-submit.

Anonymous Abdul Cholik said... (Friday, June 26, 2009)

I have coppied the widget above but I don't know where should I paste on it in my blog. You said : the header of blog's html.Where is it ?How can I change the title,is it the title of my blog or something else
Thank you

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Saturday, June 27, 2009)

@Abdul, your blog is already RSS-enabled, however the error is in the feeds themselves.

Everything seems working in Firefox, but not in Internet Explorer (whose components we rely on while reading feeds). Please try accessing yourself the blog RSS through IE, and see "more information" for details.

Once you review your configuration (try googling for the text of the error), you are welcome to re-submit at blogupp.com

Anonymous Robert Bravery said... (Thursday, July 02, 2009)

I tried to submit my blog in both FF and IE, but get this message:
Sorry, there is no RSS for this weblog, or it is empty. BlogUpp! needs it for sharing articles.

I have checked the link in the header, the RSS is showing correctly in both browsers, and by clicking the RSS icon, I can subscribe to the rss feed. Titles are there as well as content.

My blog url is http://www.integralwebsolutions.co.za/Blog.aspx

THanks for you help

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Friday, July 03, 2009)

@Robert, your case is a unique one.
Indeed, on front operations the blog feeds seem to work fine. However the case needs further investigation. We'll get in touch as you as soon as the cause is identified. One of the suppositions is that a redirect is taking place, preventing the feeds from being detected on the initial landing page.

Anonymous littlehouse said... (Friday, August 07, 2009)

I too am hosting my own wordpress blog and the rss link at the top is working in both IE and FireFox. Any suggestions? I have titles. Please help. Thanks.

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Saturday, August 08, 2009)

@littlehouse, you are right - the RSS link on your blog is ok, although there is lacking a line of code, which will instruct web browsers to recognize your blog feeds, which isn't happening right now.

In the source code of your blog, there is just a reference to appleboxdesign.com/littlehouse. Please consider that and re-apply.

Anonymous littlehouse said... (Saturday, August 08, 2009)

Thank you for looking at my RSS problem. I was afraid that it might be the redirect that was a problem. If I sign up using the true address:
is there a way to mask this with blogupp so it just points to the domain www.littlehouseinthevalley.com? For instance, my domain name is masked even though it is redirecting. Please let me know. thanks!

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Saturday, August 08, 2009)

@littlehouse, the solution would be to insert in the landing page (littlehouseinthevalley.com) the one line of code (mentioned above in this tutorial) with the actual RSS link.
To mask URLs is not supported for now.
Hopefully this helps; nevertheless, please feel free to email us for further follow up.

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Friday, February 05, 2010)

@Nora, your blog doesn't have post titles as such, which are required to broadcast correctly your blog updates. You could fix that easily by considering to add titles to new blog posts.

@ilovepink1078, we are glad you understand now the importance of RSS feed. Besides being able to submit your blog to BlogUpp! and other blogger services, it allows your readers to follow you very conveniently.

We've noticed the RSS issue on your blog, which consists in permanently redirecting your feeds to your home page. Please consider exploring blogger.com's help, or submit an assistance request to blogger.com Google groups.
Tip: Blogger.com Team is very receptive via Twitter (@blogger).

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Friday, June 11, 2010)

@SnipedYa it looks the issue has been solved, as we've just managed to submit your blog successfully. Presumably RSS auto-discovery was the cause, and we assume you've sorted that out already.

Anonymous AIDY said... (Wednesday, June 16, 2010)

I read in an above post regarding the feed-burner feed and I too, am not able to validate my blog, which is a self hosted blog (WordPress). I have the RSS feed icon in my browser, but I am still getting the error message with BlogUpp.

Thank you for any advise :D

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Wednesday, June 16, 2010)

@AIDY you should be able to get your widget now.
There seem to be some redirects in your blog, which didn't allow to detect your feed initially. An workaround helped though.
Please try again.

Anonymous AIDY said... (Wednesday, June 16, 2010)

Got it! Thank you so much! :D

Blogger AIDY said... (Friday, June 18, 2010)

I do not know if the 'workaround' helped, my feed to my blog is no longer validating with Google. I am getting URL is not allowed at this location error. Feed proxy?

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Friday, June 18, 2010)

@AIDY we are confirming that your blog is ok within our community.
BlogUpp! successfully reads and shares your blog, and you can see as evidence of that your blog page in our blog directory, or your own stats details.

As far as Google not validating your feed - please address a support question in Blogger discussion groups, or via Twitter @Blogger.

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Saturday, June 19, 2010)

@Maketta please consider enabling RSS auto-discovery (as instructed above) for your home page (http://simplyspending.weebly.com), and try again. That should help.

Blogger Ardezar said... (Tuesday, August 10, 2010)

is there a solution to the rss re-directing problem when using iweb to publish your blog? I tried using the html widget to add your code, but that doesn't seem to work. Is there another solution?

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Wednesday, August 11, 2010)

@Ardezar, currently we do not process re-directs, in order to avoid links from URL shortening services being submitted.

One thing you could do is to include the RSS auto-discovery tag on the initial landing page. Hopefully that helps.

Blogger Kerry said... (Wednesday, April 06, 2011)

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Wednesday, April 06, 2011)

Dear Kerry,
as I'm looking at your blog feed it shows up as empty. Please consider setting up a valid feed generator for your blog, and re-submit. Should you need further advice, feel free to explore BlogUpp FAQ or contact us.

Hi! I'm trying to submit our blog (www/growingcoaches.com/blog) but am getting the "RSS Feed is invalid" message. As far as I can tell the feed is active and working - any help would be appreciated!

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Thursday, July 14, 2011)

Dear Mr. Reynolds @GrowingCoaches.com, thank you for your interest.

Apologies for the inconvenience. It turns out your blog's feed URL is of a rare format, which isn't supported as of now; my guess is that there might be issues with it while applying for other services too.

One solution for it is to give it a try and publish your feed through FeedBurner, which will issue a standard format feed URL that could replace the uncommon one.

Hopefully the above helps.

Hi I'm new to BlogUpp (and the entire RSS feed world). This is my Link http://travelmygola.blogspot.in/
The RSS button appears automatically on my blog but seems to be dysfunctional. I tried installing the widget option through your website http://www.blogupp.com/ but it said, "Sorry, the link or RSS feed associated with it is invalid". I have followed the instruction written thereafter, to go to "settings" and change some of the options and have checked several times to no avail. If you could please help me install the BlogUpp option, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

Blogger Valer @BlogUpp said... (Sunday, March 18, 2012)

@The Bengali, thanks for your interest in joining BlogUpp community!

Now as we choose to view your feed we do actually get the error message "That feed could not be found". Please consider sorting that out firstly via Blogger.com support.

On the other hand, you use "Dynamic Views" for your blog, which currently do not have a sidebar, and hence you won't be able to add BlogUpp gadget. The advice would be to choose a blog template with a sidebar to get started with us (but after sorting the feed issue, as mentioned earlier).

Hope this helped. Please send a support email should you need further assistance.

Enjoy your blogging!
